Mahindra To Electrify Its Popular ICE SUVs – Thar, Scorpio, Bolero

The Mahindra Thar.e, Scorpio.e, and Bolero.e are scheduled to be released shortly, and all three are likely to be based on the skateboard EV design.

Mahindra & Mahindra launched the Oja series of tractors together with the N-based Scorpio Global Pik Up and Thar.e concepts in 2023. The company laid out its plans for the future, including the timetable for the launch of its electric SUV range. The new models have been introduced in the form of the XEV 9E and BE 6E-born EVs, which were launched today.

It was confirmed that Mahindra’s IC-engined SUVs will be electrified shortly. This means that each of the MUVs, Bolero, as well as the Scorpio SUV, are likely to get electric powertrains in the near future. Contrary to expectations, the Mahindra Scorpio and Bolero could not be built on the traditional ladder-frame platform. They are believed to be based on the specialized skateboard EV design, INGLO, which underpins the BE and the XEV series.

The Mahindra Thar.e will feature a customized model of the INGLO P1 design, with an extended wheelbase and a higher ground clearance. Many automakers around the world are sticking with the frame-on-body chassis but have adapted it to electrification. Mahindra may have looked into this option too to allow the Thar.e to preserve its robust capabilities while changing towards electric motors.

Mahindra chose the INGLO platform for its benefits in the packaging. In the Thar, the battery is set on the floor while the wheel is set close to the edges in order to maximize the interior space. This strategy of design is expected to be replicated by Mahindra’s Scorpio.e and Bolero.e. Mahindra Scorpio.e, along with the Bolero.e, which will further enhance the cabin space while maintaining an efficient and compact arrangement.

Like the Thar.e, the Scorpio.e, along with the Bolero.e, is expected to offer a top-of-the-line approach, departure, and break-over angles. This will help improve its off-road abilities. Inside the cabin, these models are expected to be equipped with the latest connectivity options and modern conveniences. Mahindra has also announced that the version in production of the Scorpio N pickup truck is likely to launch by the end of 2025 or 2026.

The dates of the launch of the 5-door Thar.e, Scorpio.e, and Bolero.e are not yet known, but it was revealed that both the Thar.e as well as the Scorpio.e will have a four-wheel drive layout. Mahindra could utilize recyclable materials within the cabin, with certain surfaces being designed to be washable to ease the process. Exterior design elements are expected to be a bit less somber compared to the conceptual models.
